About John
​
John P. McNeil is the founder of McNeil Law Firm, PLLC. Mr. McNeil has considerable experience in litigation, non-litigation and mediation surrounding all aspects of family law, including divorce, child custody, child support, visitation, alimony, post-separation support, equitable distribution, alienation of affection, domestic violence, property distribution, and other complex legal matters.

John is a Certified Mediator for Family Financial Settlements and accepts party selected designations as mediator as well as accepting court-appointed designations in certain counties in North Carolina.
Education

Mr. McNeil is a graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Law in 2001. Prior to attending law school, John attended East Carolina University and North Carolina State University before finishing his undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington with a B.A. in Political Science.

Since finishing law school, John’s career has included helping clients through the financial and emotional impact of their divorces, working as an associate in complex civil litigation cases, and defending clients in criminal and traffic matters. He regularly attends Continuing Legal Education courses in order to better serve his clients. John is a member of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Attorneys, 10th Judicial District Bar Association, and the North Carolina Bar Association.

John prefers to help his clients resolve life’s issues and legal matters through good decision-making and compromise rather than by taking their personal matters into the courtroom. He is compassionate, fair-minded, and easy to get along with, but when the situation calls for decisive action he will do what it takes to stand up for what is right. Mr. McNeil focuses his experience, determination, and intelligence on serving and protecting the clients of McNeil Law Firm during what can be some of life’s most difficult challenges.
Personal Life & Military Career

As an “Army Brat,” John had the opportunity to live and travel throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. John joined the US Marine Corps in 1986, volunteered to be a Scout in the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Mr. McNeil received numerous service awards and medals, achieving the rank of Sergeant and led Marines in the Panama Invasion, Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He has traveled to five continents and throughout the Mediterranean, traversed the Suez Canal, and trekked through the Arctic Circle. Still a dedicated veteran, John has been active in supporting the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Toys-For-Tots, and supporting veterans Farmers in North Carolina. John spends his spare time with his family, his children and grandchildren, and traveling around the continent on his motorcycle.
